Sundays at the Smoki Lecture Series: The Wetherills of Mesa Verde and Beyond
March 13, 2011
The Wetherill family began ranching in southwestern Colorado in 1880. A few years later, their destiny was changed by their discovery of some of the large cliff dwellings in what is now Mesa Verde National Park. Some of the family members developed an ongoing passion toward the rugged terrain of the Four Corners region, it's ancient inhabitants, and the contemporary Native Americans who lived there. Several of the Wetherill brothers became explorers, guides, and traders to the Navajos. Their interest in these endeavors was driven by a conviction that the primordial landscape offered something of great humanistic value and enlightenment for modern people who had become isolated from their primitive roots.
