Thumb Butte Festival 2010: The Smoki Museum
September 25-September 26, 2010
Bringing their traditions alive, the Verde Valley Bird Dancers and Gourd Singers from the Yavapi-Apache Nation offer beautiful renditions of their traditional songs and dances. The "Bird Dancers" mimic the songs of birds throughout the dance, and the swirling motion of their capes imitate bird's wings. Gourd singing is accompanied by shaking gourds, with the resonant voices of young men singing songs steeped in tradition.
Work of Native American Artists and photographer, Lynette Tritel, will be on display and for sale. Current Smoki Museum Exhibit: Expansive display of Southwest Indian Jewelry: Past to Present.
On Saturday and Sunday at 4:00pm and 7:00pm the Smoki Museum invites you to a pre-Centennial preview of Fred and Mary: An Unconventional Romance by Micki Shelton during the 6th Annual Thumb Butte Festival.
Spanning the years 1876-1958, this quasi-historical play invites you to explore Arizona history through the lives of hotelier/restaurateur Fred Harvey and architect Mary Colter whose love and respect for Native American culture profoundly influenced the development of the Southwest.
