DANCE

Hopi and Navajo Dancers
May 7, 2010
Hopi and Navajo students from the Keams Canyon Elementary School will showcase their traditional dancing skills in two performances at the Sharlot Hall Museum on Friday, May 7. The dancers will perform at 7 p.m. for the general public following a 1 p.m. invitation-only performance for some Prescott-area students. Both performances will be held indoors in the Museum's Lawler Exhibit Center. Guests are asked not to photograph the dancers. The Navajo dancers will perform the Navajo Song and Dance, a social dance that includes males and females. This is a contemporary round dance that originated from a healing ceremonial dance called Niitah-Squaw Dance. The Hopi students will perform an elaborate and strenuous dance called the Rainbow Dance, which is a traditional prayer to bring rain to the arid lands of the Hopi Reservation.
