The Summer Navajo Rug & Indian Art Auction
June 6-August 31, 2009
The Smoki Museum is pleased to announce its new exhibit entitled Images of the Past featuring the photography of C. S. Fly, Edward S. Curtis and Kate Thompson Cory. Here is some information about the photographers: C.S. Fly: Fly was a photographer from Tombstone, AZ beginning in 1879 until his death in 1901. In March 1886, Fly accompanied U.S. Army General George Crook to attend surrender negotiations with Geronimo at Canon de los Embudos in Northern Sonora, Mexico. The photos taken by Fly during these negotiations were the only photos taken of American Indians still at war with the United States. Edward S. Curtis: Curtis believed Indians were a vanishing race and took it upon himself to make a record of their life and traditions . As he said "I want to make them live forever." His project began in 1898 and lasted until 1930. Kate Thompson Cory: Cory was an artist born in Illinois and trained in New York. She came west to be part of an artist colony to be created near the Hopi Mesas. During the early 1900s, Cory lived among the Hopi for seven years on First Mesa eventually relocating to Prescott. In addition to her painting, she was a photographer. Most of her photographic works are the images she took during her time at Hopi.
